Introduction PDF Print E-mail

A veteran publisher reviews the current state and future of the publishing industry for books.

Print publishing, in all its forms, faces unique challenges and threats. How the industry, jointly and severally, responds to these will define which publishers survive, and which die.

In June, 1966 I attended a speech by Robert F. Kennedy. It may have been the best speech of his all-too-short life. Something he said then certainly resonates for publishers today:

Like it or not, we live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also the most creative of any time in the history of mankind. And everyone here will ultimately be judged — will ultimately judge himself — on the effort he has contributed to building a new world society and the extent to which his ideals and goals have shaped that effort.
